TRAINING EVENT 2 - @Vilnius University

Digital Enhancement of Active Learning in Higher Education

Description of the Training Program

This training program was designed in the context of PBL4COLLAB.TT project: https://blue.dps.uminho.pt/pbl4tea/.

In this program the participants will be challenged to develop a proposal to change a course or part of one course, considering three principles: 

  1. Implementing active learning approaches by using technology to support it. 
  2. Facilitating collaborative learning. 
  3. Reflect on your own teaching practice.

During the training, the participants will have the opportunity to develop their teaching practice, interact with colleagues from different Higher Education Institutions and have support from experts.

The language of the training will be in English and will be carried out exclusively face-to-face at Vilnius University, Vilnius, Lithuania. The registration is free of charge.

Team of Trainers

The training will be deliverable by an international and experienced team of trainers from Portugal, Ireland, Turkey and Lithuania.

Diana Mesquita – Universidade Católica Portuguesa 

Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Education and Psychology, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Porto, Portugal. Diana M. has strong research experience in the field of Higher Education. Ferah Özer – Koç University, Turkey

Learning Experience Designer and Instructor at Koç University. Dr. Özer has been teaching graduate and undergraduate courses about teaching in higher education and creative thinking.  She also has been working as an expert teacher trainer for the Turkish Ministry of National Education and as part of her duties at KOLT, she designs and holds trainings and workshops for faculty members. She published many of her scholarly works in internationally recognized scientific journals in the field and authored a number of books. Zuhal Zeybekoğlu-Koç University, Turkey

Director of Koc University Office of Learning and Teaching, Istanbul.  She used to teach academic skill courses to undergraduate students and effective teaching courses to graduate-level students. For the last ten years, she has been designing and delivering faculty development workshops on various topics, such as course design, effective teaching, active learning, etc., and holding individualized consultation sessions with faculty members on improving their daily teaching practices. Tom O’Mahony, Munster Technological University

 Tom O’Mahony works with the Teaching and Learning Unit (TLU) at Munster Technological University (MTU). At MTU he coordinates and teaches on the Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. He is responsible for designing and leading staff professional development initiatives at MTU related to active learning, assessment and educational research. His research interests include active learning, especially flipped, project and problem-based learning, assessment and feedback, and engineering education. He currently leads an Educational Research Laboratory at MTU. Tom has over 50 peer-reviewed publications and hasis reviews for several educational research Journals.

Rui Lima – School of Engineering of the University of Minho 

Associate Professor at the School of Engineering of the University of Minho, Portugal. His main research interests are in IEM fields: Production and Project Management; Lean Production; Agile Project Management; Lean Healthcare; Engineering Education; Project-Based Learning (PBL); and University-Business Cooperation (UBC). He has been collaborating on international projects with universities of countries from Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. He has been developing editorial work in collaboration with several journals and is the author of more than two hundred peer-reviewed papers in journals, book chapters and conferences.

Rui Oliveira – Department of Biology of the University of Minho 

Rui Oliveira is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, teaching Molecular Biology and Pharmacology to Biochemistry and Applied Biology undergraduates. His research focuses on the beneficial properties of plant and algae extracts, including antioxidant, antigenotoxic, antimicrobial, and neuroprotective effects. Additionally, Oliveira has a keen interest in teaching and learning methodologies. He is involved with the Centre IDEA-UMinho, where he promotes teaching staff development and supports teaching innovation through workshops, training events, and communities of practice. He has received recognition for his pedagogical innovations, including a prize from the School of Sciences at the University of Minho in 2022 and the IUBMB Tang Education Fellowship in 2023 for his work on communities of practice at Munster Technological University in Ireland.

Inspiring Lecture on AI

Dalila Durães – School of Engineering of the University of Minho 

Dalila Durães is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Informatics and a Researcher at the ALGORITMI Center of the School of Engineering at the University of Minho, Braga. Her research focuses on Artificial Intelligence, specifically in Intelligent Tutoring Systems, Human-Computer Interaction, Behavioral Analysis, Natural Language Processing, Sentiment Analysis, Automatic Recognition of Human Actions, and Automatic Detection of Violence. She has authored over 60 scientific publications, serves on the editorial board of various international journals, and has been a jury member for several theses. She is a vice- chair of Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence and the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society (Portuguese Chapter).
